For those of you who are unaware, the founder of this group, Dr Mel Siff
unexpectedly died in March of 2003 and a few close friends and colleagues
have agreed to keep the list going in his honour. For those of you who
didn't know Dr Siff, he was a man of unmatched passion and generosity, a
quick trip through the archives and the files sections of this group viewing
posts and photos, will attest to that. If you would like how much Dr Siff
meant to other group members, just go back and look at some of the tributes
posted after Mel's untimely passing, They start from around post number 19
990.
PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS NOT A GROUP WHERE YOU GET FREE PERSONAL TRAINING.
SIMPLY ASKING MEMBERS FOR A TRAINING PROGRAM OR DIET WILL HAVE YOUR POST
REJECTED.
As it states on the homepage - the goal of this group is to discuss the
theory and practice of sports science, biomechanics, physiology, medicine
and psychology in sport, fitness and general health.
It pays special attention to strength training in Olympic Weightlifting,
Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, competitive sport and general fitness. Topics
include weight and machine training, flexibility, Russian methods,
periodisation, plyometrics, sports restoration, massage, nutrition, mental
preparation, disability training and injury management.
It encourages questioning much of the fitness and training information to
which everyone is exposed daily, because too much dogma, inaccurate
information and belief are presented as fact in the fitness, sports and
health markets today. We intend that interaction among members will serve as
a valuable free source of useful information and education.
We have a number of rules on this site and you should know up front that all
posts are moderated, so spam, flaming posts, unsigned posts etc. will not be
approved, so please don't waste your time by sending them.
In order to prevent the spread of virus' e-mail attachments aren't permitted
on the list (you can send them but they won't come through).
One aspect that Dr Siff was passionate about was signing all posts with your
full name and location. So please end all posts with your full name, town
and state/country of residence, with the goal of making this often
impersonal form of communication, a more friendly and open environment. We
also ask that all sentences use proper punctuation - full stops and
appropriate capitals and that paragraphs are used. Also, please spellcheck
all posting before submitting them.
For those of you interested in purchasing Dr Siff's books, please see the
post following this one, for details on how to get them. They are both
required reading for anyone involved in the strength conditioning, physical
activity and rehabilitation game - coaches, practitioners and athletes
alike.
One other request that moderators make is that you at least spell check all
submissions. We can spend up to ten minutes altering a single post, and
moderators will in future be instructed to simply return the post, to be
corrected and resubmitted. So please try and use correct grammar, paragraphs
and remember that the language of the group is English. For those people for
whom English isn't their first language we're happy to edit and polish up
your posts if we can understand them.
Another issue on all groups is flaming and it basically won't be tolerated
(we are having some issues at the moment trying to find the right balance!).
Finally, we'd like to offer some advice on posting.
1. Firstly, if you are asking questions, please show some initiative and
tell everyone what information you already have. People simply asking
questions to save themselves some work like - please tell me how to train or
what is plyometrics, usually get ignored. If you are asking for advice for
example about injuries, give as much detail as possible what happened,
treatments to date, training and sport history plus future goals.
2. Before you post a question, use the archives to find out if anyone has
already answered your questions in the past. It may answer part or all of
your questions.
3. We ask that if someone takes the time to send you an in depth answer,
please take the time to respond to them privately in order to thank them
(just click on their e-mail address) and not via then list - otherwise our
inboxes will be full of personal messages, something that we try to avoid on
this list.
4. Where possible we ask that people provide scientific evidence for their
posts, this isn't a gym, so simply saying 'the latest research shows..'
without referring directly to it, won't get you far in this forum. If there
is no evidence or you are presenting opinions, that is okay, just make sure
that you quantify that is what you are presenting - other members won't let
you get far misrepresenting anything.
So to all of the new members welcome, enjoy and learn!
